Optus and Curtin University Accelerate 5G Innovation with Opening of Western Australia’s First 5G Lab

Dedicated research lab set to launch new 5G applications and enhance student experience

The future became reality with the launch of Western Australia’s first industry-university 5G lab, Optus and Curtin University showcasing some of the possibilities that 5G technology has to offer.

A number of industry and education stakeholders, along with the Honorable Don Punch MLA, Minister of Disability Services; The Peach; Innovation and ICT, visited Curtin University’s Perth campus to test 5G technologies, some of which are available now and others that are just around the corner.

Technology demonstrations showcasing the fast speeds and low latency of the Optus 5G network included the ability to use 5G connectivity to provide remote robot interaction and operation; distance training of visually impaired people in the use of guide dogs; remote monitoring of brain activity for epileptic events through subdural EEG recordings; and a new immersive visual platform for distance learning. Supported by the Optus 5G network, the new space will accelerate 5G innovation and connect staff, students and industry to cutting-edge technology.

The Unique Lab is co-funded by Optus and Curtin and provides students and faculty with an on-campus space to explore how 5G technology can reshape our world and improve the quality of life and work in society.

Deon Liebenberg, vice president of product innovation at Optus Enterprise, said this provides a critical test bed for conceptualizing new 5G applications that will make a substantial contribution to the Australian economy and industry as a whole. .

Curtin’s Vice-Chancellor Professor Harlene Hayne said the University was delighted to be able to provide such a revolutionary space for students and researchers to learn and work.

This 5G lab will enable Curtin to provide innovative and high-impact digital learning and research opportunities, especially through the use of integrated technologies, such as augmented reality, virtual reality and artificial intelligence, a declared Professor Hayne.

Importantly, it will also help us harness the power of these next generation capabilities to deliver enhanced teaching and learning experiences to our distant and regional students.

This smart new campus is just another way for Curtin to fulfill its mission of promoting, developing and supporting innovation and industry-oriented researchers and graduates.

The Honorable Don Punch, MP, Minister of Disability Services; The Peach; Innovation and ICT, said opening the 5G playground will create an atmosphere of innovation for future projects, and inspire and educate businesses across WA and Australia.

The opening of the Optus and Curtin 5G laboratory is a major step in consolidating WA as a leader in innovative technologies with life-changing impacts. 5G has the potential to transform industries across the country, including mining, oil, gas, agriculture and healthcare, propelling new technologies and jobs for the future.

5G also has the ability to transform education and support new academic applications, including artificial intelligence, robotics, virtual and augmented reality. As Australia responds to changing global economic challenges, new technologies like 5G will make a substantial contribution to Australian industry and help grow entrepreneurial activity by creating a more diverse and resilient economy.

Technology presented at the launch of 5G Lab:

Remote interaction of the Baxter robot

A demonstration of the potential of using 5G connectivity to provide remote robot interaction and operation. Achieved through the modernization of an existing two-armed android-type robot, showing that 5G can enhance the capabilities of existing equipment and provide new opportunities for equipment development.

Distance training of guide dogs

This project aims to remotely train visually impaired people in the use of guide dogs. Several sensors, microphones and IOT cameras will be placed on the guide dog’s harness and 5G technologies and the bandwidth provided by 5G will be used to transmit telemetry, voice and video data from the operational site to the base station for display on a VR headset. .

Remote monitoring of brain activity using subdural EEG recordings

This project aims to develop a mobile subdural EEG recording device to monitor a patient’s brain for epileptic events. 5G mobile communication from the EEG device will allow dense EEG signals to be transmitted and processed at the edge of the network to provide real-time responses to the clinician.

Visual Immersive platform for distance learning assisted by 5G

Our new visual and immersive platform adaptable to individual needs will allow the most distant person to engage in quality learning. VITL illustrates this in the field of pharmacology.

The demonstration of this platform is EYE HEAR YOUR RHYTHM which visualizes the effects of light as well as drugs delivered directly into the eye via drops or intravenously in the arm. Students can observe the effects on pupil size and heart related parameters. Individual variability within people is included in the readings to give a more realistic representation of real life situations. This model helps to understand desired and unwanted effects, and how each type of drug works differently with the additional understanding of topically administered drugs versus systemically administered drugs.

Worker Safety and PPE Detection with AWS

Demonstrate how to use AWS DeepLens and Amazon Rekognition to identify if someone on a construction site is wearing the correct safety gear, in this case, a helmet. Space – Virtual meeting and collaboration via 5G

An interactive demonstration of using the 5G network to provide a real-time connection to a virtual meeting space. The demo will allow visitors to communicate in a virtual meeting across the country via 5G and share a discussion about what they hope this new mobile frontier will facilitate in the future.
