Kerala Fiber Optic Network Service Expected To Start In Two Months | Kochi News

KOCHI: Paving for the commissioning of the much publicized Kerala Fiber Optic Network (Kfon) project in the district, over 90% of government offices under the first phase of the project have been connected to the fiber optic cable network.
Once the Kfon project is operational, government offices and educational institutions located within the project boundaries will benefit from high speed internet access and this will help these offices to provide various services to the public in a fast and efficient manner.

The project will help set up Wi-Fi zones in different areas, thus providing free internet connectivity to the public. Telecommunications service providers can also use the facility by paying for rentals. The laying of the fiber optic cables for the first phase of the project was more than 85% completed.
According to officials associated with the project, the first phase of the project can be launched in the district in less than two months. “The project is launched in the eastern parts of the district in the first phase. There had been a lot of obstacles in laying the fiber optic cables. Yet we managed to connect over 90% of the offices that come under the project in the first phase, ”said S Suhas, who was relieved of the district collector charge on Monday.
It is within the limits of the districts of Kalamassery, Aluva, Perumbavoor, Muvattupuzha, Piravom, Kothamangalam and Koothattukulam KSEB that the Kfon project will be launched in a first phase. “In the next phase, we will be able to provide Kfon connections to the offices and educational institutions of Cochin and its suburbs, ”said an official associated with the project.
Kfon’s fiber optic cables are run through KSEB transmission pylons and power poles. Two types of cables are laid as part of the project. The first is the Optical Ground Wire (OPGW) which is used to cover long distances such as KSEB transmission towers. The OPGW, which can be carried underground, will be used wherever overhead lines cannot be pulled. The other type of cable is known as Self-Supporting Dielectric Cable (ADSS) which is pulled through utility poles.
The main obstacles to laying the cables are the permits required from central government agencies such as the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) and the railways. “It will take a long time to get approval from such agencies. Seven government offices in the Aluva region could not be connected to the Kfon network because the NHAI did not allow the laying of cables across the Marthanda Varma Bridge. Permission from the Center is required to pull cables through the naval weapons depot area near Aluva, ”sources said. According to officials, the work of the first phase was relatively easy. “In the second phase, pulling cables through KSEB poles in busy urban roads would be a tedious process,” officials said.
