Ahmedabad: cops flush out illegal calls from telephone exchanges in Gulf countries; 1 inmate

Ahmedabad: In a big victory, the criminal branch of the city police unearthed an illegal telephone exchange operating from a shopping complex on CG Road in Navrangpura. Following the bust, the police team arrested a resident of Pune for his alleged involvement in the affair.

Apparently, at the bogus telephone exchange, international calls were converted to local calls, causing huge financial losses for the country.

The arrested accused was identified as Riyaz Sheikh. The main accused operates a business called Fiber Story Communications. The accused confessed that he ran the illegal telephone exchange with his friend Farzan Ali from Gir Somnath.

The incident came to light after detectives in the criminal branch learned that an illegal telephone exchange was operating at CG Road.

The report further suggests that Tabrez Kataria, a resident of Sarkhej, ran an illegal clearinghouse where VOIP (voice over Internet protocol) calls are converted into GSM (global mobile communication system) calls. The prime suspect Tabrez Kataria and his business partner (Dwayne) were providing this illegal service to their customers in different countries, mainly the Gulf countries.

According to a report published in the India time, during the interrogation process, Kataria revealed Riyaz’s name after the police team investigating the case arrested Riyaz on December 16.

The report further suggests that Riyaz was also in contact with Patikani nationals. According to the investigation, the illegal telephone exchange resulted in a loss of Rs 3.66 crore for the country. In just 11 days, they managed to facilitate calls of 12.46 lakh, which were converted to GSM calls.
